“An extraordinary story of bravery and insanity on the high seas …..  one of the most gripping sea stories I have ever read”. Sebastian Junger: author of the The Perfect Storm.

I got this book for Christmas and I have so enjoyed reading this sailing story , I am over half way through already!   A real page turner for anyone who enjoys sailing.

Peter Nichols has really done his homework and research and shares the story of the nine competitors  in the first Gold Globe race, and their boats.   Only one makes it back.

The route was around the world ‘by way of the three capes’, in clipper ship parlance: The Cape of Good Hope in South Africa,Cape Leeuwin, Australia and South America’s notorious  Cape Horn..  Competitors would sail alone, without stopping or putting in at any port, without assistance or resupply.

The drama is overwhelming, the seas epic, the bravery and tenacity of these men to sail single handed, alone with their challenge and their own thoughts.  Amazing story and a recommended read.

Have you read this book?  What do you think?  Perhaps you have another book you could recommend?  It’d be great to hear from you.
